The Mrtvica River, as well as the upper course of the Morača River in the municipality of Kolašin, are home to many natural and cultural treasures of exceptional importance for Montenegro, but also for the entire region. The value of these rivers is now appreciated by the Municipality of Kolašin, by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation with non-governmental organizations Eko-tim and The Nature Conservancy. The aim of this cooperation is protection and preservation of Mrtvica river and the upper course of Morača and their natural values.
The protection initative is expected to lay foundations for sustainable use of natural and cultural- historical values of this area. In order to preserve indigenous plant and animal species and high landscape values, we need to prevent potential threats that could jeopardize the overall value of this areas by protecting these rivers, in accordance with the Law on Nature Protection of Montenegro.
By signing the Memorandum of Cooperation, all partners commit to actively pursue the protection of Mrtvica and Morača, raise awareness of the citizens of Kolašin on the importance of these rivers and their preservation in line with the needs of the local community.

The next step in the protection process of these two rivers, is the development of a protection study, by the Environmental Protection Agency. This work is funded by NGOs The Nature Conservancy and Eco-team.
"By initiating the proclamation of the Mrtvica canyon and a section of Morača as a protected area, municipality of Kolasin seeks to fosters equal territorial development. By protecting and managing the area, we will be meeting our nature protection goals, along with promoting sustainable tourism and creation of new jobs for the local population. Given the growing number of tourist visits to the area, we are convinced in the financial viability of the project" stated representatives of the Municipality of Kolasin.
Such cooperation between the public and civil sectors is an examplar of good practice, showcasing how to jointly realize a common view of sustainable development and nature protection, thus contributing to the vision of Montenegro as an ecological state. Together, we can build a better, fairer and greener society for both nature and people.
